Peggy Guggenheim and its house: if you are fond of 20th C art, this is a highly recommended visit. A wonderfully curated exhibition of modern and contemporary art in the former home of Peggy Guggenheim. Palazzo Venier dei Leoni became the residence of Peggy Guggenheim when the wealthy heiress moved to Venice in 1948. This is where she lived until she passed away in 1979: a stunning yet unfinished mansion right on the Grand Canal with a beautiful terrace and a back garden.
Today it is part of Peggy’s uncle Solomon Guggenheim Foundation of New York. The artworks range from Cubism and Surrealism to Abstract Expressionism and comprises pieces from the Nasher Sculpture Garden and the Schulhof collection. It is both a place of art and of cultural meditation: a single visit is not enough to appreciate the array of masterpieces displayed inside.
The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is situated in the charming district of Dorsoduro which was the home of several foreign guests in the 19th C. Here you will surely enjoy a brief stroll to explore this quiet, residential neighborhood, to be concluded with a visit of Santa Maria della Salute. This extraordinary and massive Baroque church dedicated to Our Lady of Good Health was built after the horrendous plague of 1630 that caused the loss of one third of the population. Symbol of gratitude and renewed hope, it stands on a very scenic location from where you can enjoy a stunning view over the Grand Canal and St. Mark’s Basin.
