Tintoretto and The Jewish Ghetto

Visit the highlights of the Cannaregio district: A Charming Walk Unveiling that Venice You Might not Expect

Certainly, the Church of the Madonna dell’Orto is  a stunning monument of Gothic ecclesiastical architecture. It is situated in the district of Cannaregio, just a few steps away from the building which was once the home and workshop of Jacopo Tintoretto.

Definitively, Tintoretto was  one of the main protagonists of Venetian painting in the late 16th C. The painter left some of his most significant works in this church. Especially relevant are the paintings flanking the main altar.  There you can admire some masterpieces of Tintoretto: the two high canvases representing The Adoration of the Golden Calf and The Last Judgment. Noteworthy is also The Presentation of the Virgin Mary at the Temple, The painting triggered the collaboration with his parish church,, later his burial place. A commemorative plaque dedicated to the artist is visible in the chapel to the right of the central apse.

The tour includes the discovering of Tintoretto and the Jewish Ghetto. As we leave the church, our walk will proceed to reach the area of the old Jewish Ghetto. The Ghetto, established in 1516, was the Jewish quarter in the city, eventually accommodating 5000 residents. There are five synagogues, and today two of them still operate all year round for the members of the Jewish community in Venice. Our tour will end here.  If you wish to visit the Synagogues and the Museum you can join a regular tour offered by the Museum.
