St Mark's Square, Hidden Venice and a Boat Ride

So as to understand Venice, you have to start off your visit in St. Mark’s Square. Long the social, political and religious centre of the Serenissima Republic, the piazza is framed by some of the most outstanding buildings in the city. Let us unfold the history and role of these stately monuments: the Procuratie, the Clocktower, the Ducal Palace and the Library, the Dungeons and the Bridge of Sighs.

The impressive and vast St Mark’s Square is dominated by the tall Belltower, once the Venetian lighthouse, and the façade of St. Mark’s Basilica. This church is the oldest monument in town, built in 1063 to house the remains of the Evangelist. Let us lead you inside to admire its overwhelming interior draped with golden mosaics and precious marbles. In the Piazzetta, the two imposing granite columns crowned with the symbols of the Venetian State, St. Mark’s lion and St. Theodore, frame the edge of the whole space. It served as a grand entrance to the city from the waterfront. Further down are the Dungeons and the Bridge of Sighs.

As we leave St Mark’s Square behind us, we shall appreciate a more intimate aspect of the city, peaceful and quite different. You can see how the “city built on water” functions, with the local shops and the residents carrying out their daily activities. Finally, we will take a cruise along the awesome Grand Canal and within the maze of narrow, hidden smaller canals. Venice has got to be seen from the water!
