TOUR n. 20
THE STONES OF VENICE: WHEN THE GRAND TOUR DISCOVERED THE LAGOON CITY
In the 18th C British artists snobbed Venice
and flocked instead to Rome, Florence, Pompei to study classical
ruins and draw Arcadian landscapes. Architects visited the city
to study the Palladian buildings rather than admire its Byzantine
and Gothic monuments. "The Church of S. Marco surprises you more by
its extreme ugliness than by anything else. The Ducal Palace is even
more ugly than anything I have previously mentioned", the architect
Joseph Woods recorded.
John Ruskin visited Venice for the first
time in 1835. The city - popularized by his writings - became a must
for British and American tourists who armed with The Stones of Venice
began arriving in great numbers. A lovely walk and an unusual visit of
the city as seen by its 19th C opinionated visitors.
