TOUR n. 16
PATRICIAN RESORTS: THE VILLAS OF THE VENETIAN MAINLAND
During the 16th century the Venetian mainland
became the destination of rich patricians who built their summer
homes there. It was the beginning of a phenomenon, the rural idyll
which continued for another two centuries until the fall of the
Republic. Approximately 2000 country homes were built in various
parts of the region, all displaying the opulence of their owners.
Famous architects (Andrea Palladio, Francesco Maria Preti) and famous
artists (Veronese, Giambattista Zelotti, Giambattista Tiepolo, Giovanni
Antonio Pellegrini) created magnificent environments for this new
Venetian vogue that came to be known as the “society of villas”.
We will visit some of the most beautiful homes located along the
banks of the Brenta, the “Grand Canal” of the mainland,
including: Villa Foscari “La Malcontenta”, Villa Widmann,
the Valmarana and Alessandri “barchesse”, and the splendid
Villa Pisani.
Or you can head towards the hills surrounding Treviso and admire
Villa Emo and Villa Maser, both magnificent Palladian masterpieces.
- The excursion takes a minimum of 4 hours
and requires a means of transport not included in the tour price.
- The visit to the villas situated beyond the
Province of Venice takes at least 7 hours and a lunch break is
advisable.
Duration: 4 hours
