TOUR n. 13
THE BIRTH OF THE CITY: A SQUARE, A CHURCH,
AND A PALACE. SANTA MARIA FORMOSA AND THE QUERINI-STAMPALIA COLLECTION
The origins of Venice began with the aggregation
of many small communities that gradually settled on the group of
islands spread over the lagoon. The new settlements followed a particular
urban plan that with time was to be repeated over and over again:
a central square (the Venetian “campo”), a church, a
bell tower, a jetty, a well, palaces owned by the wealthier families
and dwellings for the poorer inhabitants. It is significant that
the rich and poor lived side by side, unlike in modern cities. Each
community had its own patron saint, feast days and customs.
On the tour we will trace the birth and development of the island
of Santa Maria Formosa, visit the fifteenth century church and the
luxurious home of the Querini Stampalia family that still contains
a precious collection of original works of art. Between 1961-63
the renowned architect Carlo Scarpa carried out a daring and experimental
restoration project for the palace that retained traditional principles
while injecting modern elements.
The Querini Stampalia Museum
is closed on Mondays
