TOUR n. 11
ANDREA PALLADIO AND THE ALL'ANTICA REINVENTION OF CHURCH ARCHITECTURE: THE CHURCHES OF SAN GIORGIO MAGGIORE AND THE REDENTORE
Palladio was not invited
to build palaces in Venice, but he was hired to design churches.
Some of his important projects were actually refused and yet the
classical language of his architecture in the churches of San Giorgio
and the Redentore were to become blueprints for architecture for
hundreds of years to come.
On the island of San Giorgio, and then
on the Giudecca, you can admire the classical harmony and proportion
of the two churches. At San Giorgio, we won’t let you miss
the opportunity of a visit up the bell tower from where you can
enjoy the best view of the Lagoon.
