TOUR n. 9
“FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD”:
CANNAREGIO AND THE CHURCHES OF SANT’ALVISE AND THE MADONNA
DELL’ORTO AND THE JEWISH GHETTO (OPTIONAL)
Among the bridges, canals and fondamenta:
a walk through the quiet neighbourhood of Cannaregio, where you
can still experience the genuine Venetian atmosphere. Here, in the
northernmost part of the city, is the Madonna dell’Orto Church,
one of the most important Venetian Gothic buildings. It was for
this church, just a short walk away from his home, that Jacopo Tintoretto
painted some of his most important works and it is here that the
artist is buried, in accordance with his wish.
Nearby is the Church
of Sant’Alvise, which houses one of the first examples of
a choir gallery, as well as three wonderful paintings by Giambattista
Tiepolo dedicated to the Passion of Christ, sacred works full of
great emotional intensity. The tour finishes at the old Ghetto where
it is possible to visit the Jewish Museum and the ancient Synagogues.
