TOUR n. 7
FOREIGNERS, GALLEYS AND GONDOLAS:
VENICE THE MARITIME CROASSROADS OF EAST AND WEST. THE ORTHODOX CHURCH
OF SAN GIORGIO DEI GRECI, THE SCUOLA DALMATA DI SAN GIORGIO DEGLI
SCHIAVONI AND THE NAVAL MUSEUM.
As a great maritime power, Venice was an
international emporium that brought together a host of ethnic groups
and cultures. Many left their mark in the city. We start our tour
with a little corner of Greece, visiting the oldest Greek Orthodox
Church in the West. We continue to the Scuola di San Giorgio degli
Schiavoni, site of the Dalmatian community, a small gem decorated
with canvasses by Carpaccio.
A walk down the city’s narrowest
streets brings us to the entrance of the Arsenale, the State shipyard
where galleys, the pride of the Venetian fleet, were built and fitted
out. Nearby is the Naval Museum: here you can find maps and naval
paraphernalia, gondolas and a model of the Bucintoro, the Doge’s
sumptuous vessel that was destroyed by Napoleon.
The Naval Museum
is only open in the mornings.
It is also closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Duration: 2 hours
