TOUR n. 6
THE PLAGUE, FEAST DAYS AND ILLUSTRIOUS CITIZENS
IN DORSODURO: THE SALUTE CHURCH AND THE PEGGY GUGGENHEIM COLLECTION
The first memorable and deadly outbreak
of the plague decimated the population of Europe in 1348. This was
followed by other more or less serious outbreaks. Venice was not
immune to this terrible disease: the Republic had to make quick
decisions about what steps to take and which saints to turn to.
This led to the building of some votive churches: these splendid
buildings were to show the population’s gratitude and to instil
new hope. In 1630 the Senate decreed to build a temple dedicated
to the Holy Virgin and instituted an annual festival that is still
celebrated to this day. The architect Baldassare Longhena designed
the Basilica della Madonna della Salute, the most extraordinary
example of Venetian Baroque architecture. The church is situated
on the easternmost point of the charming Dorsoduro area, which in
the 1800s was already one of the most popular residential areas
for wealthy foreigners.
Just a few steps away from the Salute is
the home of Peggy Guggenheim, one of the major art collectors of
the twentieth century. Shortly after exhibiting her collection at
the 1948 Venice Biennale, Peggy Guggenheim bought the Venier dei
Leoni Palace, where she lived for thirty years and created her famous
museum home.
